Greece's first heatwave victim was uninsured and working double shifts

Uninsured and working double shifts in the heat, a 46-year-old food delivery driver died of heat stroke in Chalkida. He died after returning home from the grill house where he worked.

He felt very unwell with a headache and fever, collapsed and then died.

The delivery driver was known to the shopkeepers of Chalkida and as reported on Proto Thema, he worked in a grill, often made deliveries with his bicycle and was exposed for hours to temperatures exceeding 40 degrees because he needed the work and the money.

“We would see him loading the bags with the orders onto his bike and going out into the heat to deliver them," say people who knew him and saw him working hard to make ends meet.

"He worked for a long time on his bike, uninsured without causing problems to anyone. I knew he needed the money and I supported him."

The parents of the 46-year-old and his twin brother are shocked by the sudden death of their loved one. They are shocked and await the results of the autopsy where they will shed light on the causes of the 46-year-old's death.

The owner of the grill is free

The owner of the grill in Chalkida, who was arrested for manslaughter after the death of the unfortunate 46-year-old, was released after his testimony.

As it emerged from the police investigation, the man worked yesterday Thursday as a distributor at the grill of the arrested person - without a relevant employment contract - from morning until noon.

At 16:00 he returned to his home and immediately began to feel unwell until he finally lost consciousness and collapsed. At 17:00 he was admitted to the General Hospital of Chalkida and, despite the efforts of the doctors, half an hour later he was pronounced dead.

In a statement, the hospital states: "On Thursday 07/20/2023, he was presented at 4:55 p.m. to the Emergency Department of the Chalkida Hospital by ambulance, a 46-year-old man (not a distributor) with dysphagia, apnea and with mydriasis.

"Body temperature 40 degrees. Resuscitation, CPR and intubation were performed to no avail. Electrocardiogram isoelectric line time 5:30 p.m. Probable cause of death is cardiorespiratory arrest after exposure to very high temperature."
