Germany, Britain and France were Greece’s main tourist markets between January and July, according to the detailed data on travel traffic published by the Bank of Greece.
In January-July, inbound travel traffic increased by 21.9% and amounted to 16.17 million travellers, compared to 13.26 million in 2022. In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 15.5%, while through road border stations increased by 45%.
During the period under review, travel traffic from EU-27 countries amounted to 9.72 million travellers, showing an increase of 20.5% compared to the corresponding period in 2022, while travel traffic from non-EU countries -27 increased by 24.1% and amounted to 6.45 million travellers.
Travel traffic from euro-area countries increased by 14.1%, while travel traffic from EU-27 countries outside the euro area increased by 35.3%. In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 11.4% to 2.3 million travellers, while that from France increased by 12.4% to around 1 million travellers.
About countries outside the EU‑27, travel traffic from the United Kingdom rose by 3.2% to 2.1 million travellers and that from the USA by 43.5% to 737,400 travellers.
Inbound travel traffic in July was 6.1 million travellers, up 15.8% compared to the corresponding month in 2022. In particular, travel traffic through airports increased by 9% compared to July 2022 and this through road border stations by 36.2%.
The increase in inbound travel traffic came from a rise in travel traffic, both from EU-27 countries by 18.7% and from non-EU-27 countries by 11%. More detail, the travel traffic from the Eurozone countries amounted to 2.29 million travellers, which increased by 12%.
Travel traffic from the EU-27 countries outside the eurozone also showed a 29.9% increase, which amounted to 1.59 million travellers. In particular, travel traffic from Germany increased by 16.1% to 746,400 travellers, while that from France increased by 0.5% to 372.5 thousand travellers.
Concerning the countries outside the EU-27, travel traffic from the United Kingdom decreased by 1.4% to 802,000 travellers, while that from the USA increased by 10.6% to 209,000.
Besides, in the January-July period, travel receipts showed an increase of 20.2% compared to the corresponding period of 2022 and amounted to 10.3 billion euros.
This development is due to the rise in receipts from residents of EU-27 countries by 14.7%, which amounted to 5.65 billion euros, and receipts from residents of non-EU-27 countries by 27%, which amounted to 4.4 billion euros.
In more detail, receipts from residents of the eurozone countries amounted to 4.55 billion euros, which increased by 15.1%. In comparison, tickets from residents of the EU-27 countries outside the eurozone showed an increase of 13% and amounted to 1.1 billion euros.
In particular, receipts from Germany increased by 7.0% and amounted to 1.72 billion euros, while receipts from France increased by 23.9% and amounted to 782 million euros.
From countries outside the EU-27, tickets from the United Kingdom rose by 11.9% to €1.62 billion. Collections from the USA increased by 33.8% and amounted to 737.8 million euros.
In July, travel receipts increased by 15.1% compared to the corresponding month of 2022. In more detail, tickets from residents of the EU-27 countries showed an increase of 11.3%, which amounted to 2.29 billion euros.
In comparison, receipts from residents of non-EU countries -27 increased by 20.3% (July 2023: €1.78 billion, July 2022: €1.48 billion).
The rise in receipts from residents of EU-27 countries was the result of a 12% increase in receipts from residents of euro area countries (July 2023: €1.75 billion, July 2022: €1.56 billion), as well as tickets from residents of EU-27 countries outside the euro area by 9% to 544.9 million euros.
In particular, about the most important countries of origin of travellers from the eurozone, receipts from Germany increased by 2.1%.
They amounted to 581.4 million—Euros, and those from France increased by 14.9% to 322 million euros. From countries outside the EU-27, receipts from the United Kingdom rose by 17.3% to €764.3 million, while those from the USA increased by 0.9% to €214. 4 million euros.
