The railway connection on the central Athens-Thessaloniki route, which had been interrupted due to the disasters caused by the storms "Daniel" and "Elias", is being restored after the arrival, at dawn, of the first cargo train at the Thriasio Freight Centre.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, only freight trains will run on the railway line until December 16 to decongest freight centres as quickly as possible. From December 16, passenger trains will also be launched in order to restore the railway service fully.

Within the first months of 2024, the final restoration work will begin on the central axis and the two other railway sections, Larissa-Volos and Paleofarsalos-Kalambaka, and the Pelion tourist line.
