Rescue operations are underway on the Greek island of Amorgos after a retired U.S. police officer, Eric Calibet, 59, went missing while on a solo hike. This incident comes just days after the death of TV doctor Michael Mosley under similar circumstances.
Calibet, who was vacationing on the island, left for a challenging four-hour hike from Aegiali to Katapola around 7:00 AM. Eight hours later, a friend reported him missing to Amorgos police. Authorities have been unable to reach Calibet on either of his two cell phones.
The last message Calibet sent was a picture of a trail sign to his sister.
A rescue operation launched on Tuesday afternoon resumed on Wednesday morning with reinforcements from nearby Naxos island. Police have requested data from mobile operators to pinpoint Calibet's last known location on the island, which has a population of around 2,000.
The American tourist's disappearance follows the death of prominent TV Dr Michael Mosley, who was found dead on the neighbouring Greek island of Symi after a five-day search. The two islands are about 200 miles apart.
