On Friday, Georgia Adilini, the prosecutor of the Supreme Court (Areios Paghos), issued a directive to the Athens District Attorney’s Office to launch an investigation into allegations of fraud during the recent European elections.
This action was prompted by a report dated June 13, 2024, from Alternate Interior Minister Thodoris Livaniou. The report, referenced as number 69/13-6-2024, highlighted serious complaints made by Kyriakos Velopoulos, President of Elliniki Lysi, and former MEP Georgios Kyrtsos. Both political figures have raised concerns about irregularities and potential fraud affecting the election outcomes.
“Following the report from the Alternate Interior Minister, which underscores the urgent need to address the complaints of election fraud, we are calling for an immediate and thorough investigation,” Adilini stated in her order. “The gravity of these allegations requires swift action and comprehensive examination to ensure the integrity of our electoral process.”
The directive emphasises the necessity for a rapid and in-depth investigation to ascertain the validity of the claims and to maintain public trust in the democratic process. The Athens District Attorney’s Office has been tasked with taking all necessary actions and providing relevant updates as the investigation progresses.
The move to investigate these allegations reflects the judiciary’s commitment to upholding electoral integrity and addressing any potential breaches that may undermine the democratic framework. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the credibility of the recent European elections and the broader political landscape in Greece.
