Greek Coroner: Assistant Trainer Died by Drowning

Toby Sheets

ABC News interviewed Greek coroner Ioannis Aivatidis, who concluded from his autopsy that longtime assistant trainer Toby Sheets, responsible for Steve Asmussen's Belmont Park division, died from drowning.

The autopsy results were reported by the coroner in Corfu, Greece, and shared with ABC News on June 18. ABC also noted that the United States Embassy in Greece was assisting in the repatriation of Sheets' body to the U.S.

Sheets, 55, originally from Hot Springs, Arkansas, was vacationing in Greece when he was discovered deceased on June 16 on a rocky and somewhat isolated beach on the Greek island of Mathraki.

He had been reported missing since June 13 and was last seen on June 11 at a café with two female tourists who later departed the island. Concerned friends contacted the police after finding Sheets' home unlocked, with lights and air conditioning running, but without any sign of Sheets, his identification, or travel documents, as reported by The Independent.
