Greece Issues Weather Warning: Tourists Advised to Take Precautions

Wet Weather Greece

Tourists across Greece are being warned of severe weather conditions expected in the coming days. Popular holiday destinations, including parts of the mainland and the Ionian Islands, are bracing for extreme weather starting Monday

The islands of Corfu and Kefalonia, among Greeceā€™s busiest tourist spots, will likely experience intense rainfall, thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds through Wednesday afternoon (September 11). These conditions could lead to increased flooding risks in certain areas.

The weather system, moving in from the west, will first impact the eastern Greek islands before spreading north and west. Visitors hoping to enjoy the late summer sun may find their plans disrupted by these adverse conditions.

Travellers are advised to adjust their plans, particularly if they involve outdoor activities, as the situation is expected to persist until Wednesday morning. Greece's national weather service, EMY, has issued advisories to keep both residents and tourists updated.

Vassilis Kikilias, Greece's Minister of Citizen Protection, urged vigilance, noting that the severe weather is not typical summer instability but rather an autumnal system. "This means that the adverse conditions could last longer and may lead to local flooding," he explained.

Tourists should also verify the status of their flights, as delays may occur due to the weather. Greek authorities recommend staying informed about the latest weather updates and taking necessary precautions to ensure safety during this period.
