Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has warmly welcomed Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew as he visits Australia, marking a historic moment for the Greek Orthodox community. The visit coincides with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Archdiocese of Australia, a milestone for more than 400,000 Greek Orthodox faithful across the nation.
On Saturday, His All-Holiness participated in a procession to the Annunciation of Our Lady Cathedral in Redfern, located in Sydney's inner city. This event commemorated the Greek Orthodox diocese's centenary in Australia.
"This is a historic occasion and a great honour for our nation," Prime Minister Albanese stated at the cathedral. He praised the archdiocese for its century-long role in fostering unity and embodying the principles of love and compassion central to the Christian faith.
In light of this significant anniversary, Mr Albanese announced a $25 million contribution from the federal government to restore the Redfern Cathedral and enhance St Andrews Theological College. He emphasised the importance of preserving and passing down centuries of tradition and knowledge to future generations, aspiring to fortify the community and faith for the next 100 years.
Following the service, His All-Holiness was scheduled to meet with Mr Albanese at Kirribilli House. This visit is just one event in a two-week itinerary that will see the Patriarch engaging with Greek Australian and diaspora communities, as well as political and interfaith leaders in Sydney and Melbourne.
The Patriarch's visit to Australia is the second of its kind, with his previous visit 28 years ago marking the first time an Ecumenical Patriarch travelled to the country.
Known for his advocacy of environmental causes and interfaith dialogue, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's presence underscores the enduring bonds between the Greek Orthodox Church and the broader Australian community.
Following the church service in Redfern Sydney, Australia, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, accompanied by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia and His Eminence Metropolitan Kirill of Imbros and Tenedos, visited the official residence of the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, in Sydney. The visit was made at the Prime Minister's kind invitation.
During their meeting, His All-Holiness engaged in a productive discussion with Mr. Albanese. He began by thanking him for attending the solemn Doxology held earlier that morning at the Holy Cathedral of the Annunciation, marking His All-Holiness’ official reception.
In a warm and cordial atmosphere, they discussed matters of mutual interest, particularly Hellenism and Orthodoxy in Australia. His All-Holiness expressed his satisfaction with the strong institutional cooperation between the Australian Government and the Holy Archdiocese of Australia and the genuine personal friendship shared between the Prime Minister and Archbishop Makarios.
After the visit, His All-Holiness Bartholomew, Archbishop Makarios, and Metropolitan Kirill signed the guestbook of the Prime Minister's Residence.
