Santorini and Mykonos Face Tourism Slowdown

Mykonos

According to data released by ELSTAT, two of Greece’s most popular tourist destinations, Santorini and Mykonos, have experienced a second consecutive year of sluggish performance.

Santorini recorded a decline in revenue in August, falling to €69.4 million from €71.1 million in the same month last year. In contrast, Mykonos saw a slight increase of 4.6%, reaching €99.3 million.

While over-tourism has been cited as a potential factor contributing to this downward trend, the high cost of living and inflation have also played a significant role. Despite the drop in foreign tourists, Greek visitors have helped to fill the gap.

Passenger traffic at Mykonos Airport has also decreased, with international arrivals in September falling by 9% compared to the previous year. Santorini, however, has shown signs of improvement following a weaker performance last year.

Overall, the Greek tourism sector has faced challenges in meeting high expectations, and the islands of Santorini and Mykonos are not immune to these pressures.
