Greeks living abroad will soon be able to obtain their passports through a fully digital process, following the approval of article 60 in Law No. 5143/2024 by the Greek Parliament.

The law, titled “Regulations for Mainland Border Check Points, the Enhancement of Local Government Entities, and Other Decrees,” introduces reforms aimed at streamlining passport issuance and reducing processing times.

The initiative is a collaborative effort among key government officials, including Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, Citizen Protection Minister Mihalis Chrisochoidis, and Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou. Technical preparations are currently underway to enable Greek consulates abroad to efficiently serve citizens through this new system.

Deputy Foreign Minister Giorgos Kotsiras is overseeing the project, which aligns with the objectives of the 2024-2027 Foreign Ministry Strategic Plan for Greeks Abroad. This new digital process is expected to significantly improve the passport application experience for expatriates.
