The University of Athens ranks 15th in Europe, 62nd worldwide

The university ranked 15th among European Universities and first among Greek public universities for 2024-2025.

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA) is now 62nd worldwide, according to the AD Scientific Index World Top Universities Ranking 2024-2025. EKPA rose 30 places from last year and is among the top 100 universities in the world in terms of research activity.

More specifically, the university's ranking increased 30 places compared to last year and now ranks 62nd worldwide among the 24,317 universities, research institutes, and organisations from 220 countries included in the ranking.

Additionally, EKPA is ranked 15th among European Universities and first among Greek public universities for 2024-2025.

They are followed in second place in Greece and 194th place worldwide by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in third place in Greece and 330th place worldwide by the University of Patras, in fourth place and 399th place worldwide by the University of Crete, and the National Technical University of Athens in fifth place and 425th place worldwide.

The University of Thessaly follows them in 472nd place, the University of Ioannina in 541st place, the Democritus University of Thrace in 768th place, the National Research Center "Democritos" in 822nd place, and the Technical University of Crete was tenth in Greece and 919th internationally.

The corresponding top five universities and research institutes of Cyprus included in the ranking are the University of Cyprus, which is ranked 678th worldwide; the Cyprus University of Technology, which is ranked 1141st; the University of Nicosia, which is ranked 1943rd; the Cyprus Institute, which is ranked 2578th, and the European University of Cyprus, which is ranked 2742nd worldwide.

"The results of this ranking highlight once again the multi-level, extroverted and above all influential orientation of the research by the professors and researchers of the University of Athens," said the university's rector, Professor Gerasimos Siassos.

"Especially in the global rankings, which are based on open access tools and a series of criteria that focus on highlighting the quality and not the quantity in research, it is proven that the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is rightfully in the top 100 Universities worldwide.

"Warm congratulations and many thanks to all the colleagues and researchers of our institute for the high productivity and quality research.

"It is the cornerstone of a modern successful and internationally prominent University, which aims at innovation, extroversion and international cooperation."

This ranking is the first and only one based on the overall and recent indicators of research productivity of the universities' most important scientists and researchers.

More specifically, each university's performance, rating, and position are calculated based on its scores on the h-index and i10 indicators and the references to Google Scholar of its research potential.

Another important distinction for the University of Athens is the fact that it has the largest number of scientists among the Greek universities in this ranking (2287), while 155 of them are in the top 3%, 536 in the top 10%, and 927 in the top 20% of researchers worldwide.
