Two great singers, Maria Farantouri from Greece and the Israeli tenor Assaf Kacholi, are appearing together on stage for the first time in Australia, as they pay tribute to Mikis Theodorakis' 95th birthday.
Their songs tell of love and passion, of melancholy and gaiety, of courage and sorrow, of war and of true peace. Songs full of strength and humanity, which have travelled the world.
Maria Farantouri and Assaf Kacholi will are set to shine a bright light into the hall of sombre memories, with the songs from Mikis Theodorakis’ Ballad of Mauthausen. Seventy-five years after the liberation of the concentration camps at Auschwitz, Mauthausen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Bergen-Belsen and elsewhere, the two artists commemorate the suffering, but above all the longing for life and the dreams for the future of millions of people.
Maria Farantouri and Assaf Kacholi take us on a path through the world of poetry and song. A path that leads to the heart. This great musical event allows us to discover two singers with very different personalities, who have come together in the world of music.
In this commemorative concert, singer Maria Farantouri says, “This year we celebrate Mikis’ 95 years of life, I dedicate to him these concerts in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne. As Miki mentioned to me, he would feel ‘as he would be here with us.’ This year, we also celebrate the 75th anniversary of the defeat of Nazism in Europe and the liberation of our people from the barbarity of the Holocaust. This is also an anniversary that we will remember in our concerts with the much-loved Ballad of Mauthausen. As an artist, I feel proud to perform at these concerts, and cooperate with the symphony orchestra under the direction of George Ellis and with the participation of Israel’s exceptional Tenor Isaf Kacholi.”
The Ballad of Mauthausen will be joined by a selection of Theodorakis’ most beautiful songs, including settings of poetry by Seferis, Elytis, Cavafy and Lorca, conducted by George Ellis. The concert is a tribute to Greece’s favourite composer, as he approaches his 95th birthday.
