The Australian Parliamentary Friends of Greece honoured Greek Independence Day, 25 March 1821, in Canberra yesterday in the presence of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, Greece's Ambassador to Australia Mr Stavros Venizelos, Greek Deputy Minister of the Interior Mr Theodoros Livanios, Archbishop Makarios of Australia and many industry and community leaders.
The Parliamentary Friends of Greece is intended to provide a non-partisan forum for parliamentarians to meet and interact with Community organisations providing support to the Greek Australian community on matters relating to Hellenic culture and community wellbeing.
The Australian Parliament set up Parliamentary Country Groups in order to fortify its relationships with foreign parliaments around the world through engagement with their parliamentarians as well as members of the diplomatic community. This work is integral to its overall international engagement.
Australian Parliament maintains 11 parliamentary networks. These groupings are devised from the United Nations composition of macro-geographical (continental) regions.
Where there is significant interest within the parliament of a particular country, an individual country group may be established within their regional network. However, networks are responsible for all countries within their region – not solely countries which achieve an individual country group.
