A Greek police officer stationed outside the residence of a top judge in Athens was hospitalized early Thursday with burns following a gasoline bomb attack, authorities reported.

The motive behind the pre-dawn assault in a suburban area of the city remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

According to police, unknown assailants threw gasoline bombs at the officer before fleeing the scene. The officer, who sustained injuries to the face and arms, was guarding the home of Supreme Court President Ioanna Klapa, which was left undamaged by the attack. A nearby police vehicle, however, suffered severe damage.

Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis condemned the attack, declaring it an "absolute priority" for authorities to apprehend the culprits.

In Greece, police and occasionally other symbols of authority are common targets for far-left militants. However, attacks resulting in death or severe injury have seen a decline in recent years.
