The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, this is the day in which you can enjoy approximately 17 hours of daylight. In the northern hemisphere, summer solstice takes place between June 20 and 22.

For Greece 2016 it happened yesterday, Monday June 20th,  where the sun rose at around 5am in the morning and set at about 11pm at night.

With this also comes the official opening of Greece Summer 2016, which is a joyous occasion for anyone who will have the privilege of spending some time in the Greek sun this year.

Around this period is the commencement of fabulous events, including festivals and celebrations that will continue all through the warmer months and can be enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

From open air cinema and outdoor music concerts to beach parties and late alfresco dining- it is an amazing time to be in Greece enjoying the summer festivities.

For locals, this is a period where their work break and school holidays begin and people slowly start exiting the big cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki, and head for their island or village homes where they will spend some time relaxing and catching up with loved ones.

And this is also the time where you wish everyone a ‘Kalo Kalokeri’ (Happy Summer)!
