Due to employment insecurity- according to an annual survey conducted by the General Consumer Federation of Greece (INKA)- more than 80% of Greeks are unlikely to go on holiday this summer, citing financial reasons and job instability.

From a sample of over 800 telephone interviews during the month of June, only 25% of interviewees confirmed they were in a position to take a holiday whilst the rest said it was unlikely, 77% of which cited financial difficulties, 13% employment insecurity and only 10% professional obligations and other reasons.

The INKA survey also concluded that of those able to take holidays, 42% would stay at a privately owned summerhouses, 36% at a family or friend’s summerhouse and only 22% would stay at a hotel or rent a room.

Additionally, the duration of Greek family vacations is also expected to drop in 2016, with 42% of Greek families saying they will take a four- day holiday, 26% for seven days, 20% for 10 days, 11% for 15 days and only 1% for 20 days.

According to INKA the minimum cost for a 2-week holiday for a four-member family in Greece costs approximately 2,550 euros.
