In the first match of the 2018 Men’s European Water Polo Championship, Greece destroyed Turkey in Barcelona, earning an overwhelming 27:1 victory.

Placed in Group C with the Netherlands, Croatia and Turkey, Greece managed to achieve a fantastic result in the opening game, smashing an impressive 27 goals against the Turks. The tone was set in the first period, as the Ethniki Omada struck five markers.

Fully in control of proceedings, the Greeks continued piling the pressure on Turkey, showing no mercy to the struggling opponents. The team boasted an 11-goal advantage at half time, with the likes of Ioannis Fountoulis, Angelos Vlachopoulos and Alexandros Evgenios Gounas running riot.

15 more goals, including nine in the final quarter alone, were scored in the concluding two frames, completing a resounding 27:1 thrashing of the Turks. Fountoulis was the top Greek scorer after hitting the target on six occasions.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

The group winner qualifies directly for the quarter-final stage, while the teams in second and third positions compete in the playoffs. Having started today, the 2018 Men’s European Water Polo Championship continues until July 28.
