The community of Sitia in Crete has been left shocked and saddened by the news of a local Cretan man who strangled his wife to death in front of their two young children, aged 18 months and six months old.

The horrific tragedy occurred on Monday morning, as the 36-year-old husband who is said to have been extremely jealous of his wife, killed 32-year-old Katerina Melaki, in the presence of their two young infants.

Katerina had left the family home and was living with her mother for over one and a half years, as she was scared of her husband, however, was also hoping they could reconcile if he sought help.

According to reports, the man turned up to his mother-in-law’s house and began to argue with his wife and that is when he grabbed her from the neck and strangled her.

The victim’s brother found her lying on the floor when he arrived home and called for help but she was already deceased.

The Coroner at the University Hospital of Heraklion, Aris Tsatsakis, who spoke to neakriti.gr, said results show that the 32-year-old’s death was instantaneous and was a result of suffocation from strangulation.
