Greece’s leading film director Yorgos Lanthimos has been recruited by Italian fashion giant Gucci to shoot its latest “Cruise 2020” menswear collection.

The shoot for the new collections lookbook took place last month in Rome, the city where creative director Alessandro Michele grew up in, at the Villa Albani Torlonia’s art gallery.

The gallery is famed for ‘The Leda and the Swan’, a Roman copy of an earlier Greek statue, which Michele signifies its importance in relation to the collection as he wanted to “magnify the importance of the value of the copy, at times more authentic and real than its original”.

Yorgos Lanthimos used his creative and unique skills for the photoshoot that saw models jumping, leaping, skipping through the Renaissance halls and interacting with the artefacts on display, while styled in Gucci whimsical clothing and accessories such as velvet tracksuits, full lace gloves and Mickey Mouse-adorned jumpers and bags.

The release of the images accompany the news that Gucci will be publishing an art book with Yorgos, that is set to be released in November this year.
