16-year-old Greek Australian shot inside his home

Alex Gatis

Police are hunting for a gunman who shot 16-year-old Greek Australian Alex Gatis at his Lockley house in Adelaide's west this morning.

Emergency crews were called to the house on Malurus Avenue about 9:30am, where they found the teenager with two gunshot wounds, one to his chest and the other to his abdomen.

His 21-year-old brother who was home at the time called for help as the gunman, who was dressed in black fled the scene.

The victim was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Police have stated that Alex was in the front bedroom of his home when he was shot by the gunman from outside the window.  They also believe that the victim and his brother knew the attacker as witness accounts suggest that there was a "minor altercation" at the property the night before.

The victim's parents who are overseas in Greece are understood to be trying to get a last-minute flight home to see their son. Through their mobile phones they were able to see the crime scene live as it is linked to the home's security cameras.

The boy’s uncle, Jim Gratis told ABC that his nephew "is a really good kid and he’s never been involved in anything bad."

“That’s all we know, other than that we don’t know anything, the police haven’t told us anything yet," he added.
