A 47-year-old Italian man holidaying in Crete has been caught red-handed with 12,000 fake euros, as he made his way around Heraklion town going from shop to shop, purchasing expensive items with counterfeit euro notes.

The tourist was finally stopped after trying to purchase luggage from a local store using the fake notes. The shop owner was immediately suspicious when the man handed over the cash and after checking the bills closely, he realised it was, in fact, fake money.

The shop owner immediately called the police who tracked down the Italian tourist staying at a luxurious hotel in the city’s centre.

Police officers searched the man’s room and found counterfeit euro notes, to the value of 12,000 euros.

Authorities immediately arrested the 47-year-old, who was taken to Heraklion police station and charged with possession of counterfeit money.
