On this day in 2018, heroic Greek pilot Giorgos Baltadoros dies after intercepting Turkish aircraft

On this day, April 12, in 2018, flight lieutenant Giorgos Baltadoros lost his life.

The fallen pilot, Giorgos Baltadoros, was serving at the 331st All Weather Squadron “Theseus”, stationed at the 114thCombat Wing, Tanagra Air Base, passed away after the Mirage 2000-5 he was flying in, crashed in the sea area nine miles off the northeast coasts of Skyros, in Southern Sporades archipelago.

His fighter jet and another Greek Mirage 2000-5 were returning to Skyros air force base after confronting Turkish planes which violated Greek airspace that morning.

“He fell for faith and country, fighting to defend National sovereignty and our territorial integrity. The country bows in mourning. Deepest condolences to his family and all Hellenic Air Force personnel”, Panos Kammenos tweeted, who at that time was Defence Minister.

Baltadoros was born on June 3, 1984 in Karditsa, Central Greece. He was married and a father of two.

Thousands of people turned out to farewell Greece’s fallen Hellenic Air Force pilot Giorgos Baltadoros. His funeral took place at his home village of Morfovouni, Karditsa.
