Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the National Centre for Blood Donation on Wednesday, where laboratory tests are being performed to diagnose coronavirus, using state-of-the-art machinery.

The PM monitored the process of samples from the preparation stage to the molecular analysis.

"What is happening here is very important," he said and congratulated the staff, adding that it was important that Greece was able to exploit the centre's capabilities at a difficult time for the country, thus adding significant production capacity and carrying out additional and reliable molecular screening tests.

"I want to congratulate you, because you did in days what we would need, under normal circumstances, months to do. And it is very important that we can add significant testability, as we will begin to look at the gradual opening up of society and the economy. We need to be able to spot any outbreaks very quickly and very reliably. In order to be able to do this, we need more opportunity to do molecular tests, a possibility that you offer us here, in a very reliable and fast way," he added.

The PM was accompanied Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias, Deputy Health Minister Vassilis Kontozamanis and the ministry's representative for the new coronavirus, Sotiris Tsiodras.
