Fireworks were set off at the stroke of midnight on Holy Saturday, in seven parts of the centre of Athens, as an alternative way to celebrate Easter in the Greek capital this year, due to the strict measures imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19).
“So, from our balconies or windows, the residents of Athens – and not only – will be able to all enjoy the Resurrection message, the radiance and the light of optimism for tomorrow,” the Municipality of Athens said in an announcement.
Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis posted a video of the illuminated sky and stated “Η Αθήνα θα έχει το βλέμμα πάντα ψηλά! Χριστός Ανέστη!” (Athens will always look up! Christ is risen!)
