The former London home of the Onassis family, has been bought by a Saudi billionaire.

The famous house in Grosvenor Square, Mayfair, was sold for £18,600,000. It had a price tag of £25 million.

According to DailyMail, the deal is the highest price achieved for a single unmodernised apartment in Mayfair this year.

The flat formerly belonged to the late Artemis Onassis, the sister of billionaire Aristotle Onassis.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the Onassis residence was visited by Jackie Kennedy Onassis, wife of Aristotle; her sister Princess Lee Radziwill; Caroline Kennedy, daughter of Jackie and John F. Kennedy and Maria Callas.

The identity of the buyer has not been disclosed, but is understood to be one of the Middle East’s wealthiest businessmen.

The grand home is 465.24 sqm and features an impressive entrance hall, five bedrooms, four en-suite bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, a library, a bar, a family kitchen and three adjacent reception rooms.

Peter Wetherell, founder and chairman of Wetherell said: “The landmark sale [...] shows the continuing appeal by global wealth for trophy London properties. Ultra-high-net-worth buyers from around the world are currently wanting to acquire trophy properties of this type in Mayfair which will soon be in short supply."

“This is due to Westminster City Council’s new planning brief, which will prohibit the building of new homes of over £2,155 square foot (200 square metres). These planning changes mean that the pipeline supply of these type of large Ambassadorial residences will diminish over time," he added.
