Second Greek Cup final postponed

The final of the 2019/2020 Greek Cup between AEK and Olympiakos has been postponed again.

On Saturday evening, Olympiacos winger Maximiliano Lovera was diagnosed with Covid-19, consequently meaning that the entire squad will now have to self-isolate for the next 48 hours with the Greek Cup final against AEK being postponed again.

The game was scheduled to be played on Sunday evening at the Olympic Stadium.

Initially, the battle was scheduled to be staged on July 26 at the Georgios Kamaras Stadium, but it was put back to August as a consequence of the police not being able to guarantee the safety of the participants amid potential fights between rival supporters.

The Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) confirmed the second postponement of the game with this following statement: “Following a case of COVID-19 with a player of Olympiacos FC, the Extraordinary Issues Committee of the Hellenic Football Federation decided to postpone today’s Greek Cup final of the 2019/2020 season between AEK FC and Olympiacos. The new date of the final will be set by the Extraordinary Issues Committee.”

Sport 24 has subsequently stated that the EPO is now planning to hold the final on September 12. However, AEK and Panathinaikos have requested for work on the OAKA pitch to begin on August 31, so there is a possibility that the arena won’t be available for use when the final does eventually take place. AEK and Olympiacos will also submit a request to the EPO concerning their desire for new signings to participate in the final of the tournament.

There is talk of the Georgios Kamaras Stadium in Rizoupoli being chosen for the final again.

In the semi-finals of the competition, AEK defeated Aris in dramatic circumstances, while Olympiacos saw off the challenge of PAOK in a tough tie. No team except PAOK has won the Greek Cup since 2016 when AEK beat Olympiacos 2-1 at the OAKA.
