According to police sources, it seems that they were waiting for a boat to transport them to Italy and used the Greek island as a stopover.

In September, a broken down yacht with 73 illegal immigrants and two alleged migrant smugglers, were rescued off the of Zakynthos after the vessel sent out a distress signal, as reported by Greek City Times.

The passengers (48 men and 26 women) lacked identity papers and told Greek authorities they were from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey.
