A new lighting system was unveiled at Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) on Monday evening.
In attendance was President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach, Minister of Culture and Sport Lina Mendoni, Mayor of Athens Kostas Bakoyannis and IOC member Spyros Capralos, amongst others.
"The new lighting of the Panathenaic Stadium highlights in an impressive way the monument, which was made entirely of marble," Sakellaropoulou posted on Instagram.
The new lighting system, comprising of over 3,600 LED bulbs, will reduce light pollution by over 70% and slash the stadium’s energy requirements by half.
"The project is worthy of the importance of the space for the history of sports and culture, as the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896 in Kallimarmaro," she added.
