Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis Saturday visited the Corinth Canal, which is closed due to landslides to be briefed on the restoration plan in progress.
“After many many years, a considerable intervention is held at the Canal of total cost 9 million euros”, stated the prime minister.
“It is a very important project and we should not forget that it was built in the 19th century and now, in the 21th century, the time has come for the necessary interventions” Mitsotakis emphasised.
The Corinth Canal, one of the three existing artificial canals globally, is of crucial importance for trade and transport.
The Corinth Canal connects the Gulf of Corinth in the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, arguably making the peninsula an island. The canal was dug through the isthmus at sea level and has no locks.
