The Greek book publishing landscape is populated in its majority by small independent, often family run operations who are responsible for more than 75% of the total titles in Greece. With over 1,500 bookshops, and 3,500 points-of-sale, it is obvious there is a voracious appetite for the written word!
One such family run business is "Alpha Pi" publications, founded in 1990 by brothers Antonis and Giannis Palios on the beautiful island of Chios.
Their great love and passion for books led them to establish a publishing company that has been awarded three times by the prestigious Academy of Athens and today has over 600 titles ranging from literature, history, folklore, to rare scientific studies and is constantly on the look out to discover and introduce readers to new and emerging talented writers.
One such new talented voice to be added to their publishing portfolio is Angeliki Zevgolati whose work ΑΠΟΗΧΟΣ (OVERTONE) has been recently launched by "Alpha Pi" publications.
"Angeliki is the most recent talented addition to our publishing family. Her poetry was a great surprise. Her collection consists of two sections: the invocation of emotion and the invocation of thought, seemingly marrying both poetry and prose under the altar romanticism and surrealism at the same time," say Giannis Palios.
It comes as no surprise as Zevgolati recently won 3rd prize for her poem "WOMAN" in a national competition organised by the Hellenic Cultural Association of Cypriots in Greece.
Through her poetry collection ΑΠΟΗΧΟΣ readers will escape the monotony of the ordinary and traverse a rewarding literary journey across concepts such as life, death, and the perennial human struggle.

ABOUT THE POET
Angeliki Zevgolati was born and raised in Chalkida, Greece, with studies in the Netherlands, Serbia and London. She holds a degree in Medicine and is currently completing one in Psychology. She works in Thessaloniki where she lives with her husband Dimitri and their two children Grigoris and Apostolos.

Γυναίκα
Χόρεψε, νεραϊδογέννημα, χόρεψε και
λικνίσου.
Πάνω στην κόψη του γυαλιού με μάγια
αποκοιμήσου.
Από το αίμα που θα βγει, γέννα
δροσοσταλίδες,
δρασκέλισε τον θάνατο, μοίρασε
ηλιαχτίδες·
ξεγέλασε τον έρωτα και τρέξε στους
ανέμους
με κείνο το χαμόγελο που άναψε
πολέμους.
-
Ήμουν εκεί, στον τοκετό των θεϊκών
πνευμάτων,
στους πόνους, στρόφους, στην
οργή όλων των αθανάτων.
Μες στο κρυστάλλινο νερό και στης
αυγής τη χάρη
αρνήθηκες την άβυσσο και έφερες το
φεγγάρι.
Γι'αυτό σε είπαν μάγισσα, Εύα, Μαρία,
Ελένη·
φόβητρο έγινες θεών, μοίρα ευλογημένη.

Στα καταγώγια της ντροπής, σε φως που
σε χλομιάζει
έρχονται, σαν προσκυνητές· κανένας δεν
σου μοιάζει.
Άλλος κρατάει μαστίγιο για να σε
ταπεινώσει,
το Είναι του λιθοβολεί μες στη δική σου
όψη.

Αντάρτισσα! Διχόγνωμη! Ξαργού! Δεν
φχαριστιέσαι.
Στων εκπεσόντων άγγελων το σύννεφο
πλανιέσαι.
Να βγεις απ'τον Παράδεισο ζητάς, το
δίχως άλλο,
κι ας έχει εκεί που περπατάς
θανατικό μεγάλο

Συ γέννησες τον άγιο μα και τον
δολοφόνο·
αυτόν που σε κυνήγησε με ζήλεια και με
φθόνο.
Οι ανάσες όλων των ναζί επάνω στο
κορμί σου,
κανείς όμως δεν μπόρεσε ν' αγγίξει την
ψυχή σου.

Σε είδα κλαμένη να γυρνάς· τα χέρια σου
δεμένα.
Μα εσύ μου χαμογέλασες, ξεγέλασες
κι εμένα.
Είναι μεγάλη η δύναμη κι η ανωτερότητά
σου,
μα θέλεις κάπου ν'ακουμπάς κι εσύ
με τη σειρά σου.

Τα πολλαπλά σου είδωλα, καθρέφτες που
ζαλίζουν.
Μπροστά σου και οι δαίμονες, ακόμα,
γονατίζουν.
Καρπίζεις σαν αμυγδαλιά, ξυπνάς όσους
κοιμούνται·
κάνουν πως σε περιφρονούν αυτοί που σε
φοβούνται.

Χωρίς εσένα δεν μπορεί να κελαηδεί
τ' αηδόνι,
μόνο δακρύζει, χάνεται, κι η γη όλη
παγώνει.
Αυτή ήτανε η τύχη σου, να κάνεις γι'
άλλους δέκα.
«Χαίρε!» καρδιά παντοτινή· αληθινή
Γυναίκα!
