A 59- year-old man in Crete received an 18 month suspended prison sentence and cannot be within 100 metres of his 43-year-old wife after being sentenced in absentia by the the Heraklion Autophorous Three-Member Criminal Court for beating his wife.

The woman told the court that an argument broke out with her husband, in front of the couple’s three young daughters, because she had cooked fish soup and when he wanted French fries.

The incident, brought to light by Creta Live, took place a few days ago in the Cretan city of Heraklion, occurred when the man returned home while she was cooking fish soup for the children.

Even holding her two-year-old daughter in her arms while cooking, the 59-year-old began scolding her as soon as he realised she was cooking fish soup, saying that “this is not food for children” and demanded her to fry potatoes.

In fact, he allegedly went to the kitchen angrily to fry them.

According to the victim, when she told him that what he was doing was not right, he got even angrier and did not hesitate to hit her.

He did this despite the fact that she was still holding the youngest girl and the other two daughters, five and nine year olds, were watching.

The other two children were frightened and ran scared to their room, while when she took the two-year-old girl into another room, the man hit her even harder.

During the preliminary investigation, the 59-year-old allegedly claimed that he did make a remark about the food and said about the potatoes, however, things did not happen as the 43-year-old said.

He even claimed that the woman is vindictive and curses him.

The 59-year-old did not appear in court as the 43-year-old was there to testify that it was the first time he had beaten her in the ten years they have been together.

She said that his recent behavior was bad and that she cannot bear to continue living with him.
