With a brilliant event and in the presence of many people, the Christmas tree in Eleftherias Square in the Cretan city of Heraklion was lit up tonight, while at the same time the “Christmas Castle” opened its doors, which again this year offers plenty of options for young and old to experience.

The countdown for the lighting was given by the mayor of Heraklion, Vassilis Lambrinos , who said: “With the lighting of the Christmas tree, the trigger for this year’s festive season is given. A rich program of events for all ages follows. With respect for the environment and taking into account the energy crisis we are going through, the ‘Christmas Castle’ returns to the heart of the city in order to offer the joy and atmosphere of the celebration to every visitor, young and old. In the municipality of Heraklion, we will be by your side during the festive season, as well as throughout the year. And we will make every effort to make the festive wishes come true, to relieve our fellow citizens who have immediate needs and are in a difficult position. Happy Holidays everyone.”

Earlier, the people who flooded the square and the city centre had the opportunity to enjoy the “Lady of the Elves”, the Christmas Mickey and Minnie and the towering Stickman and listen to Christmas tunes from the municipal children’s choir and the philharmonic of the municipality of Heraklion.

Immediately after the illumination and the fireworks that lit up the sky, the “Vamos Enseble” gave a very nice concert and were warmly applauded by the audience. The concert was co-organised by the Region of Crete.

The illumination was attended by deputy regional governors, deputy mayors, members of the municipal authority, the chairman of the municipal council, etc.

The “Christmas Castle” of the municipality of Heraklion (D.I.K.E.H.) will operate until January 7, 2023.

It is recalled that this year, due to the energy crisis, it was deemed preferable to reduce the days and hours of its operation, while the decoration, both in the “Castle” and in the city in general, has mainly been done with LED lights.
