About 55 years ago, the ground in the Trikala village of Ropoto began to sink. At that time, no one could have imagined that the village, located in the south of Pindos, would eventually disappear.
An intense geological phenomenon literally swallowed the settlement, destroying houses and streets. Everyone today now describes it as a “ghost village” that was deserted.
However, there are buildings in Ropoto ready for demolition.
Specifically, on April 12, 2012, part of the village swept down about 40 metres to the bottom of the slope. Many buildings were buried in the ground, while others simply rolled down the mountain where they remain upside down.
The church of Panagia Theotokos aced the same fate. The church is unstable and on the verge of collapsing and for this reason there is a no-entry sign as the landslide continues.
However, there are some people who visit the church, risking their lives to upload videos on TikTok.
