Giannis Plakiotakis is now Greece's longest serving Minister of Shipping

Greece's longest-serving Minister of Shipping, in a continuous government term, is now Giannis Plakiotakis.

The Cretan politician completed three years, nine months and 20 days today, Saturday, January 28, 2023. He assumed duties at the Ministry of Shipping on July 9, 2019.

The minister surpassed Stavros Soumakis, minister in the government of Kostas Simitis (3 years-6 months-19 days), 3rd Manolis Kefalogiannis (3 years-6 months-7 days), 4th G. Andrianopoulos (3 years -4 months-3 days), 5th Alexandros Papadogonas (3 years-0 months-7 days).

He has been a Member of the Hellenic Parliament (MP) for Lasithi since 2004.

Plakiotakis was born in Athens and studied biochemical engineering at the University of Wales. He then completed a Master's degree in biochemical engineering at the University of London before completing another master's degree in business administration at City University London.

Plakiotakis has been a member of New Democracy since 1987. He was a municipal advisor for the Sitia municipality from 1990 to 2002. He was first elected as a New Democracy Member of the Hellenic Parliament for Lasithi in 2004, being re-elected in every election since.
