Greek President Meets Visiting Governor General of Australia (Photos)

ATHENS – On Tuesday, the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, met with the Governor General of Australia, David Hurley, who was visiting Greece at her invitation. Their meeting focused on strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Greece and Australia and exploring opportunities to enhance bilateral relations between the Greek and Australian governments.

President Sakellaropoulou welcomed Hurley to Greece and expressed her conviction that his visit would further improve bilateral relations. She emphasized the shared values of freedom, democracy, and international law between the two countries, particularly highlighting the importance of the law of the sea, which she described as “the foundation on which our relations are based.”

The Governor General also emphasized the strong ties between Greece and Australia and highlighted the significant contributions of Australians of Greek descent to the country’s political, cultural, and sporting life.

“There are strong human connections that bring us together, as well as a profound respect for democracy, the rule of law, and the entire legislative system founded upon these principles,” he said. He also expressed his pleasure at joining Sakellaropoulou on Wednesday to pay tribute to those who participated in the Gallipoli campaign on the island of Limnos.
