The special university police force was abolished and the regular Greek police will absorb the 1,060 special guards currently employed, Citizen Protection Minister Notis Mitarachi announced on Wednesday.

He also announced that he had signed a draft presidential decree which, if approved, will establish a mounted police force of about six to eight officers for tourism and ceremonial purposes in the centre of Athens, expected to begin operating in early 2024.

Regarding university safety, Mitarachi said the situation was much better than before, and university administrations could handle the problems. He noted that the police will always be available to intervene whenever necessary.

On hirings in the police force, Mitarachi said that the 150 hirings of border guards that have already been programmed will be the last.
