Christodoulidis: The better climate in Greece-Turkey relations is also positive for the Cyprus issue

Nikos Christodoulidis

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis expressed his assessment that the new climate in Greek-Turkish relations can help the efforts made by the Republic of Cyprus to restart negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus issue that has persisted since Turkey invaded the northern half of the island in 1974.

Speaking to the members of the Greek-Turkish Forum, who are visiting Cyprus and referring to Greece-Turkey relations, President Christodoulidis also noted that a possible resolution of the Cyprus issue would be decisive for the future of Athens-Ankara relations.

The Cypriot President reiterated that the current status quo cannot solve Cyprus's problem, nor can Cyprus's future be built based on the current situation, which is getting worse every day.

He also mentioned to the members of the Forum that two days ago, he sent a new letter to the UN Secretary-General for the appointment of a Special Envoy for Cyprus to examine the possibilities of resuming the talks from the point where they were interrupted in Crans Montana in July 2017.

He reiterated the readiness, commitment and commitment of the Greek Cypriot side in this direction, emphasising at the same time that his pursuit from the first moment he took office as President of the Republic is to strengthen the EU's participation in efforts not only to restart negotiations but and during negotiations.

It is noted that before the meeting with the members of the Greek-Turkish Forum, President Christodoulidis received the Greek delegation of the Forum in his office.
