Turkey and Israel to Boost Energy Cooperation and Repair Relations

Mitsotakis and Erdoğan meeting in New York September 20, 2023

Turkey and Israel are set to collaborate on energy drilling and operate energy networks to Europe through Turkey, according to President Tayyip Erdogan.

This comes after a meeting between Erdogan and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the United Nations, marking a significant step in repairing strained relations between the two countries. Erdogan stated that mutual visits and increased energy cooperation would follow the meeting. The goal is to raise the current trade volume of $9.5 billion to a minimum of $15 billion initially.

The leaders also discussed enhancing cooperation in energy, tourism, and technology through the establishment of a mechanism between their countries. Tensions between Turkey and Israel had escalated due to disputes over their policies towards the Palestinians, but recent visits and discussions have contributed to a thaw in relations.
