Tragedy Unfolds as Migrant Boat Sinks Near Greek Island of Symi

Skyscanner names Greece as one of the top travel destinations for 2021

The Greek coastguard reported late on Sunday that it had discovered three bodies as part of a search for survivors following the sinking of a migrant boat off the eastern Greek island of Symi.

In a statement, it was noted that eight individuals were found alive during the ongoing rescue operation, which involved the deployment of ships and a helicopter. The weather conditions around the Dodecanese island are favourable.

Sources informed AFP that at least two additional individuals are believed to be missing.

In recent years, thousands of migrants, primarily from Syria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, have entered Greece via both sea and land borders with Turkey.

In adherence to its rigorous migration policy, Greece has bolstered patrols in the Aegean Sea, the stretch of water between Greece and Turkey, with the assistance of the European Border Surveillance Agency, Frontex.
