Greece has decided to tackle the issue of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis setting up its first Advisory Committee which met on Wednesday.
The members of the Advisory Committee, experts in their fields from Greece and abroad, discussed the Committee's aims and the basic guidelines it will follow in its work, with a focus on improving services for citizens, including health services, meting out justice faster, handling natural catastrophes, and teaching children about AI in schools.
Members also exchanged views on how Greece could contribute to the wider negotiations to formulate a regulatory framework for the development and use of AI, incentives that could be offered for innovative research and attracting investments, and Greece's comparative advantages in personnel.
"The Committee's purpose is to help us in very practical terms with how AI can be utilized as a tool of public policy in various policy sectors which we can determine along the way," Mitsotakis said. "For example, in health or the way we fight tax evasion. AI and the Armed Forces: a very great challenge in transforming our country's deterrence potential. AI and Civil Protection: today as we speak we held a very interesting pilot experiment on Mt. Penteli on how AI tools can help us locate sources of fire quickly," he added.
One of Greece's advantages in this sense is its very high-caliber scientists available both domestically and abroad, making Greece a winner in changes and oportunities brought by AI application, he noted.
The Committee chair is Constantine Daskalakis of MIT and it includes Kimon Dracopoulos, Evangelos Karkaletsis, Vassiliki Kinti, George Pagoulatos, Fereniki Papadopoulou, Ioannis Pitas, Timoleon Sellis, Andreas Stavropoulos, Ioannis Tassioulas and Charalmabos Tsekeris.
