"Ending the 'state monopoly' on university education is imminent," says Education Minister

state Education, Religion and Sports Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis

Education, Religion and Sports Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, in an interview with the public broadcaster ERT on Friday, underlined that "the state university remains the flagship of university education in Greece but needs to be further reinforced and improved to maximise its results."

"We cannot, however, continue to preserve in the country a global exception, a state monopoly on Greek tertiary education," the minister added.

Pierrakakis explained that for this reason, his ministry is going to table draft legislation in parliament immediately after presenting it to the Cabinet before the end of 2023, to move quickly and "take advantage of the great potential that we have not tapped into for so many years for various reasons."
