A stable, strong electricity system in the Mediterranean is essential for the European Union's green transition, noted Chairman & CEO of the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) Manousos Manousakis on Wednesday.
Speaking at a conference of the Association of the Mediterranean Transmission System Operators (Med-TSO) held in Athens on the day, Manousakis added that the Mediterranean basin has a huge RES potential, which can supply the whole of Europe with clean and affordable energy.
At the same time, electrical interconnections are infrastructures that can contribute to mitigating political tensions, promoting regional cooperation and strengthening the security of supply of the countries involved, he elaborated.
Manousakis also spoke of projects of international interconnections that are maturing with IPTO's active participation.
These projects, he said, can bring the Mediterranean "to the forefront of the green transition" and will help Greece develop into a strong exporter of clean electricity, as well as a critical green energy entry point between the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and central Europe.
He made a special mention to the Greece-Egypt GREGY interconnection - a project promoted by Elica S.A, a member of the Copelouzos Group, as well as the Greece-Cyprus-Israel interconnection, which IPTO recently took on as project promoter.
Manousakis also spoke about the second Greece-Italy interconnection, the Greece-Saudi Arabia interconnection, as well as the Greece-Germany clean energy corridor Green Aegean Grid Interconnector.
