Behind the Glitter: The Hidden Generosity of George Michael

George Michael

Late pop icon George Michael soared to fame in the 1980s as half of Wham! Alongside Andrew Ridgeley, he carved a groundbreaking solo career for two decades. His music defined his legacy and earned him a posthumous spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Tragically, Michael's life was cut short on Christmas Day 2016 at his Oxfordshire home at the age of 53. His sudden death sparked months of speculation, as authorities initially deemed the cause "inconclusive."

On that fateful Christmas morning, Michael was found unresponsive in bed by his boyfriend at the time, Fadi Fawaz. Leaked audio from Fawaz's 911 call revealed his frantic attempts to wake Michael, who was "cold," "blue," and "not breathing."

Coroners were initially unable to pinpoint the cause of death, prompting further testing. Michael's past struggles with drug addiction fueled speculation, with friends and the public questioning whether his demons had resurfaced.

However, in March 2017, Oxfordshire coroners announced the cause of death: dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis. These conditions affect the heart's ability to pump blood and cause inflammation respectively. Fatty liver was also found.

Fawaz, who faced scrutiny and negativity after Michael's death, expressed relief at the news: "George can rest in peace now."

Michael's generosity, often hidden from the public eye, emerged after his death. His secret donations to charities like the Terrence Higgins Trust and Childline revealed his immense kindness.

Michael's legacy extends beyond his artistic brilliance as his music continues to resonate. His family's touching message on the first anniversary of his death reminds us to celebrate life, appreciate loved ones, and cherish the memory of a truly remarkable artist.

The singer's family took to his official website to issue a statement on Christmas 2017, the one-year anniversary of his death.

"[Michael], who loved Christmas and always hoped it would snow ... would want each of you that admired and loved him (yes — he knows you did!!) to take a moment, raise a glass, enjoy his music and think of him fondly," the family wrote, "making sure to enjoy your time with, and appreciate your family and friends."
