The 39-year-old, who was using a metal detector, was arrested on his initiative. A metal vase handle that he had just retrieved from the ground was found in his possession.

A 39-year-old man made an illegal excavation at the Archaeological Site of Philippi near Kavala, using a metal detector and a digging tool, while in his possession was found a metal handle of a vase that he had just retrieved from the ground.

He was arrested yesterday afternoon by police officers of the Department of Cultural Heritage and Antiquities of the Thessaloniki Security.

In the investigations that followed in two houses, his residence and his father’s house, in a village near Kavala, was found eleven bronze ancient coins which, which according to the opinion of an archaeologist, fall under the protective provisions of the Law on Antiquities, as well as 14 objects which need further investigation.

The above objects were handed over to the Ephorate of Antiquities of Kavala for archaeological, historical and commercial evaluation, while the arrested person was taken to the Kavala district attorney.
