The storm "Avgi" has already made its presence felt in Attica, with the phenomena expected to peak at night.

While several areas in Greece - such as Euboea and Crete - have already turned white, snow is expected to intensify in Attica and last until the early morning hours of Tuesday.

In areas such as Vili and Hippokrateio Politeia, it is snowing from the morning, while snowfall is expected, which is snowfall of 15-20 minutes.

The cold front is expected to be completed by noon on Tuesday.

Specifically, according to Sakis Arnaoutoglou, in Attica, until the early hours of Tuesday, clouds will pass from the north bringing rain at low altitudes, mainly in coastal areas.

Towards the north-northwest of Attica, it will rain and it is not excluded that the snowfall will be intense, resulting in snowdrifts. "Care is needed in the midnight hours and the morning hours" in the north-northwest of Attica, he notes.

In detail:

  • In the central parts, snow-rain is expected at 200 meters.
  • In the east, at 200 meters
  • In the north-northwest at 150 meters
  • In the west, at 200 meters

During the day, the weather will be unstable as it will occur locally showers of rain and snow and, in high altitudes, showers of snow. In the evening, the phenomena will begin to weaken, with the snow limited to 250-300 meters.

The winds will blow from the north-northeast and "care is needed for airborne objects in general in Attica". In the east, it will blow 9-10 beaufort, in the south 9-10 beaufort and in the west 8-9 beaufort. In Athens, the temperature will reach up to 7 degrees Celsius while in the northern suburbs it will fluctuate between 0-3 degrees Celsius.

The Athens-Lamia National Road is temporarily closed

And while the "Avgi storm" is sweeping, the Traffic Police announced temporary traffic restrictions on the Athens-Lamia National Road for safety reasons and to avoid causing traffic problems.

Specifically, the traffic of all vehicles has been temporarily stopped in the left lane of the N.E.O. Athens-Lamia as follows:

  • From the 18th km to the 20th km, in the direction of Lamia.
  • From the 57th km to the 55.5th km, in the direction of Athens.

In addition, it is recalled that, by decision of the director of Traffic Police of Attica, from 22:00 today, all categories of vehicles must be equipped with snow chains or other similar anti-slip devices, if these vehicles do not carry special tires during their circulation on the entire road network of the N. Attica.

On Monday evening, the police proceeded due to snowfall to the interruption of the traffic of vehicles on the Dionysos Avenue from the height of the 414 hospital to the position of Agios Petros in both directions of traffic.

Schools closed in 8 municipalities of Attica

In light of the updated weather forecasts, public and private primary and secondary schools in eight municipalities of Attica will remain closed on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 - specifically, in the Municipalities of Mandra-Eidyllia, Fyli, Acharnes, Dionysos, Kifissia, Oropos, Penteli and all primary and secondary schools (including the Municipal Music Gymnasium-Lycée and the Municipal Art Gymnasium-Lycée of Pallini) of the municipality of Pallini (not only in the area of Anthousa, as it had initially been announced).

The relevant decision was taken after the completion of the meeting of the relevant stakeholders under the competent Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vassilis Kikilias and the Mayors of the areas to deal with the consequences of the second wave of bad weather expected to hit Attica within the next few hours.

The specific decision aims to protect students, parents and teaching staff from possible risks of travel from and to school units, while a continuous re-evaluation of the data is being made for the next few hours and days.
