Μobile app and electronic platform will assess seismic vulnerability of schools in Thessaloniki

smart phone app

An application for smart mobile devices and an electronic platform that assesses the seismic vulnerability of schools have been developed as part of the research project RiskSchools, funded by the Central Macedonia Region.

The application user enters specific details into a form, such as the building's location, technical characteristics, age, construction materials, soil characteristics of the site, and soil category.

The software then generates a rating that categorises the building as adequately safe or requiring further investigation. Simultaneously, in-depth analyses are conducted using seismic vulnerability curves through the electronic platform. These analyses result in the seismic vulnerability degree of the building once again.

The application and platform were presented today at a seminar titled "Seismic Vulnerability & Risk Assessment of School Buildings."

The platform and application underwent a pilot phase from 2022 to 2023 for the seismic vulnerability assessment of 360 schools out of the 1,800 existing in Central Macedonia.

The system can be implemented in other regions of Greece and internationally, with the flexibility to adapt for assessing seismic vulnerability in various critical facilities. This includes healthcare systems (hospitals), public buildings, and so on.
