Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated in an interview on SKAI television on Tuesday morning that the minimum wage would exceed 800 euros a month. He explained that the government was striving to combat the high cost of living by raising salaries.
The prime minister also addressed those responsible for recent incidents of violence, particularly targeting members of the LGBTQI community in Thessaloniki over the weekend. He emphasized the necessity of holding such individuals to account, stating, "Responsibilities must be attributed, arrests have been made, we have a stricter anti-racist law...much more must also be done."
Mitsotakis highlighted the government's efforts to prevent and address bullying in schools, increase police presence in neighbourhoods, and take action against sports fan violence. Based on recent crime statistics, he noted a gradual reduction in crime.
Regarding the Tempi train crash, Mitsotakis responded to questions about whether the trains were carrying undisclosed substances or if the crash site had been tampered with, saying, "This is a very unpleasant discussion. I am obliged to reply. The last thing we want is for public dialogue to become a victim of fake news."
Expressing "sorrow and rage" at allegations of tampering with the crash site, Mitsotakis reiterated his respect for the victims' families and emphasized the importance of awaiting the findings of the second expert and relying on justice for answers.
Mitsotakis concluded the interview by urging those who believe political figures are criminally liable to seek an ad hoc parliamentary investigation on specific charges.
In addressing the high cost of living, Mitsotakis emphasized that increasing salaries was the government's response, aiming for an average salary of 1500 euros a month and a basic wage of 950 euros per month by 2027. He noted that wages had already increased and emphasized structural changes in addition to other measures to lower prices.
Regarding upcoming European elections, Mitsotakis positioned his party as pro-European and emphasized the significance of Greece's role in Europe during the next European cycle.
In discussing relations with Turkey, Mitsotakis highlighted the absence of violations in the past year and expressed intent to visit Ankara in May, emphasizing the importance of civil discourse even in disagreement.
Mitsotakis also addressed various other topics, including relations with Albania, support for Ukraine, and confidence in relations with the United States, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming US elections.
