Tragic Mistakes and Oversights Led to Femicide Outside Athens Police Station

Greece is still reeling after a horrific femicide on Monday evening in Agioi Anargyroi, where a 28-year-old woman was brutally stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend right outside the local police station, where she had sought help.

According to media reports, the victim was in a relationship with her murderer in 2019. In 2020, she filed a report against him for domestic abuse and rape, where she was granted a restraining order.

The two continued an on-and-off relationship, which ended officially about two months ago. She was reportedly supporting the man financially. “He was a lazy thug,” her father told Star TV.

The sequence of events leading to the murder reveals a string of fatal errors and missed opportunities by the police department to save the victim's life. The 39-year-old assailant planned the attack, stalking the victim from her residence to the police station, where he stabbed her repeatedly.

Disturbing questions loom over the incident. Did the police properly assess the danger the victim faced? Why was she not accompanied home or provided with adequate protection? These are just some of the enquiries surfacing in the aftermath of the tragedy.

A news report on MEGA has revealed that a patrol car and an accompanying officer were indeed available at the police station but, despite her repeated requests for an escort home, they were not offered to the victim.

Constantia Demoglidou, spokesperson for the Hellenic Police Department, underscores the need for a thorough investigation into the actions of the officers involved. She emphasises the urgency of scrutinising whether protocol was followed and if additional measures could have been taken to prevent the devastating outcome.

Furthermore, questions arise about the immediate response of the police guard stationed at the premises. Why did they not intervene to protect the victim as she was being attacked just outside the station's vicinity?

As authorities grapple with the aftermath, the perpetrator faces charges of manslaughter, illegal possession of weapons, and drug-related offences. Meanwhile, investigations into the conduct of the police officers involved have been launched, underscoring the need for accountability and justice in the wake of this senseless tragedy.
