Chalkida Tax Office Director and Employees Arrested on Bribery Charges

Yesterday, the director and four employees of the Chalkida tax office on Evia Island were arrested on charges of bribery. According to police reports, the five tax officials allegedly accepted bribes from citizens to expedite various procedures. Additionally, they are accused of blackmailing businesses and individuals into paying these bribes.

Authorities estimate that the bribery ring collected a total of 95,600 euros over the past three months. The police were tipped off about the officials' activities in November 2023 by an individual who claimed to have been blackmailed into paying a 5,000-euro bribe.

During the police operation, one of the tax office employees was found with an envelope containing 10,000 euros. In addition, the police confiscated 78,795 euros in cash and an unregistered hunting rifle.

Besides the tax office employees, two other individuals were also arrested for their alleged involvement in the bribery ring.
