Greek Authorities Seize Cocaine Hidden in Banana Shipment

Greek authorities have confiscated approximately 46 kilograms of cocaine concealed within a container of bananas aboard a vessel inspected at the port of Piraeus, police sources revealed on Tuesday.

This seizure follows the recent announcement by Greece that it had dismantled an international criminal organization involved in trafficking cocaine via shipping containers from Latin America to Europe.

The investigation, initiated by local authorities in collaboration with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), has already led to the seizure of two substantial cocaine shipments.

Last week, authorities seized 210 kilograms of cocaine hidden in a container of frozen shrimp that had arrived on a vessel from Ecuador and was destined for Albania. They also confiscated 110 kilograms of cocaine concealed among frozen squid.

According to the customs officer who conducted the investigation with drug squad officers, the street value of Tuesday's discovered substance is estimated to be around two million euros.

"The investigation continues to dismantle this international drug trafficking network and determine if it is connected to other ongoing cases," authorities stated.
